Do I need to sign up for medicare?

Are You or a Spouse Still Working for a Company That Offers Health Insurance?

  • If no, and you're 65 or older, then you DO need to enroll in Medicare (Parts A and/or B).
  • If yes, then you need to learn if your company offers "Creditable Coverage."

If they do, then you do NOT need to enroll in Original Medicare.

If they don't, then you DO need to enroll.

When Do I Enroll in Original Medicare?

You have a seven (7) month period to enroll in Original Medicare (to avoid a Late Enrollment Penalty. You can enroll as early as 3 months before your 65th birthday (it will become effective on the first day of your birthday month), the month of your birthday (it will become effective on the first day of the month after your birthday month), or up to 3 months after your birthday month (it will become effective on the first day of the month you choose).

For example, let's say your birthday is April 11th.

  • You can enroll as early as January 1st with an effective date of April 1st
  • You can enroll in April with an effective date of May 1st
  • You can enroll on May 1st to July 31st with an effective date of June 1st, July 1st, or August 1st

If you wait longer than that, you'll get a Late Enrollment Penalty attached to your Part B premium - for the rest of your life!
