Understanding the parts of Medicare

Guiding You Through Every Step of Your Medicare Journey

Navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. As an independent broker, I’m here to help you understand the different parts of Medicare so you can make confident, informed choices about your healthcare coverage.

Here’s a clear breakdown of the four main parts of Medicare:

NOTE: While Part A and Part B cover many healthcare needs, they don’t cover everything—which is where additional options come in.

Part A – Hospital Insurance

What it covers:

  • Inpatient hospital stays

  • Skilled nursing facility care

  • Hospice care

  • Limited home health care

Most people do not pay a premium for Part A if they (or their spouse) paid Medicare taxes while working. Part A helps cover the cost of care when you are admitted to a hospital or other qualified facility.

Part B – Medical Insurance

What it covers:

  • Doctor visits

  • Outpatient care

  • Preventive services

  • Lab tests, x-rays, and some home health services

Part B typically requires a monthly premium. Together, Part A and Part B make up what’s known as Original Medicare.

Part C – Medicare Advantage

What it covers:

  • Everything Original Medicare covers, plus extra benefits

  • Often includes prescription drug coverage (Part D)

  • May offer vision, hearing, dental, and wellness programs

Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, often with added convenience and lower out-of-pocket costs.

Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage

What it covers:

  • Helps pay for the cost of prescription medications

  • Available as a standalone plan or as part of a Medicare Advantage Plan

Medicare Part D plans are offered by private insurers and can vary in terms of formularies, copayments, and pharmacy networks. It’s important to choose a plan that fits your specific medication needs.
